We had a BLAST at our schoolwide fall field trip on Wednesday. We picked pumpkins in the pumpkin patch, got lost in a 2 mile corn maze, jumped on a bouncy pillow, and much more. We even enjoyed fresh, delicious (or as the students would say, "scrumdiddlyumptious") apple cider and donuts! It was a great success. Special thanks to Mrs. Paul for donating her time and chaperoning our trip! See below for LOTS of pictures.
We were visited by guest speaker, Mr. David Burke, on Friday. Mr. Burke and I have known each other since we were in pre-K! We attended middle school, high school, and college together. After college graduation, Mr. Burke joined the Air Force and has been serving our country. He recently returned from deployment in Qatar, and offered to come and speak to us about human rights, as well as the human rights violations around the world, that he had witnessed first hand. We really enjoyed having him come in. He taught us a lot! I think he was very impressed with our human rights vocabulary and knowledge. The students have been working very hard on this challenging topic, and it shows! Images of our time with Mr. Burke are below.
We are continuing to read The BFG. The students are enjoying this creepy tale, and are becoming experts in using context clues to understand The BFG's nonsense language.
Lastly (boy, we have been busy!), we are working on persuasive pieces titled, "Haunted House for Sale!" Students have designed creepy houses for sale, and have taken on the role of realtors. They selected scary amenities and potential buyers. As a reward for their hard work and focus, we set up some spooky writing time. We "lit" eerie tea lights and played slow, quiet music. I was very impressed by how focused the students were during this time.
Check back for updates, and Halloween photos!
